Built on Experience: The Story Behind 80,000+ Guitar Lessons Taught

Bio - The Beginning

In 1981, I picked up the guitar and was immediately captivated. As I delved deeper into music, my passion grew daily. Every waking moment revolved around the instrument, and I knew it would become the cornerstone of my life. That same deep connection I felt as a teenager continues to inspire my playing and my teaching to this day.

My First Teaching Position

In 1986, I began teaching guitar at Ken Masters Music Traders, a small, family-run music store in Lakeland, FL. My roster took off rapidly, growing from a handful of students to over 40 weekly students within a few months. I maintained this full schedule until I began touring, all while contributing to the burgeoning Central Florida music scene. It truly felt like being in the right place at the right time.

Life on the Road as a Touring Musician

From the late 1980s through the early 1990s, I toured full-time with the Orlando-based rock band Gunfighter. We shared stages with rock and metal icons like Pantera, Black Oak Arkansas, and Robin Trower, performing across the southeastern United States. Playing countless venues and entertaining thousands of fans was an unforgettable chapter of my career. During this era, Gunfighter released a self-titled EP that earned regional radio airplay and solidified our presence in the rock scene.

The Greensboro, NC Chapter

In 1992, I came off the road and returned to North Carolina, ready for a new chapter. While purchasing a set of strings at Pearson Music Company in Greensboro, I casually picked up a guitar and began playing. That impromptu audition led to a conversation with the store manager and a teaching position. Within two months, I was back to teaching 45 students a week—a full-time schedule I have consistently maintained right here in Greensboro for over 33 years.

CD Release

In 2000, I released my first instrumental album, Event Horizon, featuring five original compositions. I wrote, arranged, and recorded all the guitar and bass tracks, with a close friend contributing on drums. Event Horizon is still available today on all major streaming platforms.

The Present: 80,000+ Lessons Taught

Today, I operate my own independent teaching studio in Greensboro, NC, where I share my passion for music with a dedicated roster of 50+ weekly students. Over nearly four decades of full-time instruction, I have crossed the milestone of delivering more than 80,000 individual lessons. Guiding thousands of musicians from their very first chords to advanced proficiency remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've taken guitar lessons with Jeff Swanson on and off for about ten years, and he is the best music instructor I’ve ever had. Starting as an adult, I thought learning to play electric guitar would be more challenging and considered quitting several times. Jeff’s patience and encouragement allowed me to persist, leading to playing lead guitar in several bands. Simply put, you just have to do it.
Jeff is great at teaching all levels and styles of guitar. He’s patient, fun, and really knows how to make lessons enjoyable and effective. He makes sure the concepts are clear and always goes above and beyond, providing you with notes while you study and feedback when you play.
From my experience meeting his other students, it’s clear that he tailors his lessons to fit each student’s goals, so you always feel like you're making progress. Whether you're a complete beginner or want to refine your skills, Jeff is the perfect teacher.
If you're thinking about guitar lessons, definitely go with Jeff Swanson. You won't regret it!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took lessons with Jeff a while ago. While he was an amazing instructor he is also an amazing person. I was just toying with the idea of learning guitar and he was super patient with me, despite my complete lack of natural skill. I just wanted to learn a song but he helped me realize how important it was to learn chords then move on. He knows his stuff. He’s been there, done that, designed the tshirt. He’s exactly what you’d hope for in an instructor.

Plus, he’s a dog lover!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very knowledgeable and talented teacher, able to teach many different things. But more importantly, a very patient and kind teacher, someone you can relate to and have fun with. When you want to learn an instrument it's important to find someone who will listen to your needs and guide you along the way, someone who will let you dictate how you learn and keep it interesting and encouraging. I would recommend Jeff for these reasons.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Jeff is an awesome instructor! He takes the time to tailor lessons around the student. When I worked with him, I was 37 years old, and it was the first time in my life doing anything musically. He knew I wanted to learn some cool riffs and not be overwhelmed. Jeff listened to my interests, and helped me by teaching me the basics of guitar through scales, chord progressions, etc… but he did so whole also teaching me how to play fun songs he knew I loved like stuff from AC/DC, Van Halen, Eagles and Black Sabbath. He even let my 10 year old sit in on a couple of classes! If you’re wanting to learn guitar, Jeff Swanson is an exceptional person and instructor.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took lessons from Jeff for eight years, he is a fantastic guitarist and really great guy! Jeff worked with me through my teen years and helped me develop my own style, from learning songs I was interested in all the way through theory, scales, and advanced practice techniques. He teaches all levels and built me up from a beginner to accomplishing things I never thought I could on the instrument. I’ve now played in gigging bands and work on original music in my free time and I couldn’t have done it without him. If you’re interested in guitar lessons, for any style, look no further. He’s your guy!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with Jeff Swanson. From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted with warmth and genuine kindness, setting the tone for what would be an extraordinary journey into the world of guitar playing.

Jeff is nothing short of a master of his craft. His expertise spans across all levels of guitar proficiency and virtually every style imaginable. Whether you're a complete novice or a seasoned player looking to refine your skills, Jeff has the knowledge and patience to guide you on your musical journey.

But what truly sets Jeff apart is the welcoming atmosphere he cultivates in his studio. It's more than just a place for guitar lessons; it's a community, a sanctuary where students can feel comfortable expressing themselves and exploring their passion for music.

In addition to his technical prowess and welcoming demeanor, Jeff possesses a rare gift for connecting with his students on a personal level. He takes the time to understand each individual's goals, preferences, and learning style, tailoring his instruction to suit their specific needs. His genuine care and encouragement have been instrumental in my progress as a guitarist, and I am endlessly grateful for his mentorship.

I wholeheartedly recommend Swanson Guitar Lessons to anyone seeking exceptional guitar instruction.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I started taking guitar lessons from Jeff in 2006. I still have lessons twice a month with him now, in 2024. His teaching, guidance and patience has helped me immeasurably. I play guitar far better than I ever would be able to, without Jeff's mentoring. What I like most about Jeff's style of teaching is that he allows a student to learn at their pace, whether that is full on hard core 24/7 practice for a serious musician, or gentle and casual teaching for younger students and those guitar players that just want to learn more than they know now. Jeff's extensive knowledge of both music in general and music played with guitars is second to none. I would highly recommend Jeff for people of all ages and levels of experience.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I've been taking bass guitar lessons with Jeff for the last 15 months, which is enough time to know that I don't want another instructor. I came in with zero knowledge, and he has been incredibly patient as I've worked my way through the basics. He's really good about cheering on my small victories ("Hey, watch me play this ridiculously easy pattern!"). But I think the thing that's most important to me, as an adult with a career and responsibilities, is that he understands that life sometimes gets in the way of practicing. He doesn't nag me like my childhood piano teacher, yet he does encourage me to work through the inevitable frustrating stretches where I don't see my own progress. Plus he's just a great guy — kind and funny. I highly recommend Jeff.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I absolutely love taking lessons with Jeff and have for the last three years. Jeff has allowed me to move at my pace. He doesn’t just teach cords or music theory or box method but he teaches the balance of the relationship between them all. I can’t imagine taking lessons from anyone else. Jeff is amazing at both keeping me on track and allowing me to wander off and experiment. He gets how I learn best and is able to adapt not only to me but to every student. If you are looking to start or find someone who can teach all the high tech stuff Jeff is your man.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I am in my 24th year of lessons with Jeff Swanson. I started out just wanting to learn chords and ‘stuff’ so I could play some folk music. Turns out, Jeff had other plans. His insight into my abilities led me to be able to play with the Piedmont Guitar Orchestra as well as a trio. Jeff has an endless amount of patience, demonstrates how something should be played and answers my questions without making me feel stupid. Music has always been an important component of my life but Jeff added another dimension to it! If guitar-playing is on your radar, then please put Jeff on there as well!

His real-world experiences and openness to new music combine to make things enjoyable and relatable.
